Energy Wise Event to help cut costs in a crisis

Households looking to reduce energy costs and waste this winter are invited to attend Energy Wise on 29 October at Totnes Civic Hall, from 12pm to 5pm.

Energy advisors from local community energy groups across south Devon will be on hand to support people in exploring the ways and means of cutting costs, reduce energy use, as well as making long term changes. There will be a mix of inspirational stories and practical support.

With rising energy bills and a cost-of-living crisis, there’s never been a more pressing time to take matters into our own hands to reduce our energy consumption.

Totnes Renewable Energy Society (TRESOC) will speak about their work investing in hydro, wind and solar power projects and how to get involved in Energy Local Clubs (ELCs).

Jem Friar is the ELC advisor for Totnes, who will speak about plans to sell locally generated renewable electricity to local people at a reduced price, effectively establishing Totnes’ own renewable energy marketplace.

Jem said:

“With uncertainty around energy prices, the only practical thing, and within reasonable control of most households, is to try to reduce energy bills. We’ll be sharing plenty of ideas on how to do that with some potentially social, as well as economic benefits.”

TRESOC is working with Energy Local CIC to develop the project. Energy Local have 12 community projects across England and Wales, all helping to reduce the price of electricity for local people.

At the national level, Power to the People is campaigning for the Local Electricity Bill, which if made law, would enable community energy groups to sell renewable electricity directly to local people. For more information and to sign the petition, go to their website: powerforpeople.org.uk

Various other local organisations and groups will be in attendance offering household energy advice, retrofit advice, regional support schemes, carbon saving tips, and more.

There’ll be information and help with smart meters, advice on the installation of energy saving measures, providers of home visits, heating control advice, support applying for discounts, plus the chance to share ideas and experiences with others.

If you are concerned about the rising energy costs, uncertain about what support is available, want to know more about decreasing your energy use in general, you’ll find advice from a range of advisors, professionals, and local residents at Energy Wise in Totnes.
