Totnes is about to party like it’s 1999. This Friday 27 June, the Barrelhouse Ballroom plays host to Schwing Back to the ’90s – a one-off live gig celebrating the hits that defined a generation, from Blur to TLC.

The event is the brainchild of local bassist and trumpet player Martin Roberts, who is marking his 50th birthday in style by rounding up some of the finest musicians in town for a lovingly curated set of ‘90s bangers. Expect full-throttle live renditions of Common People, Place Your Hands, Parklife, Female of the Species, Waterfalls, Teardrop and many more.
The band features a who’s-who of Totnes talent: Georgia Swallow (fresh from her recent triumph with the Barrelhouse’s ‘Queen’ night) on lead vocals, alongside the legendary Tess O’Connor, the fabulous Elizabeth Coxon, the iconic Craig Reeson, the rocksteady Charlie Hart, the sublime Eli Eliason on guitar and Totnes’ resident pub pianist Andy Hill on keys.
“It’s a proper dream team,” says Martin. “I wanted to assemble some of the best players in town to bring to life a bunch of my favourite tunes from what I genuinely think was the best decade in rock and pop history. I can’t wait.”
Tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the door, and fancy dress is positively encouraged – think cargo pants, chokers, Britpop fringe, or full Fresh Prince energy.
The music kicks off around 8pm and dancing is totally non-negotiable.
Whether you were there the first time around or you’re just discovering the delights of the greatest era in modern popular song, Schwing! Back to the ’90s promises an unmissable night of live music, nostalgia, and sweaty joy on the Barrelhouse dancefloor.
