Dartington Playgoers are looking for directors…..

When I first got involved in Playgoers, I had done a little directing, but mainly thought of myself as an actor.    Then Tim McGill, who had who had just taken over as chair after a period of crisis in which Playgoers had been chucked out of Dartington, (History repeats!) suggested they were looking for new directors.  I fancied doing a short play by Pinter, and so I found myself directing for  Playgoers, and enjoyed it.

To begin with, my main problem was just not knowing anything: not knowing the local actors, what was available at the props store or from other drama societies, or who would help with what.  Basically, who to ask. Then I found out!

A really good production team makes all the difference .

The key person then was Rachel Schofield, who had stage managed a number of plays, and knew everything, Rachel stage managed my next production, and I learned from her where I could get what I wanted, who would help with what, who I could rely on. There is really a lot of knowledge, history and resources available here. Thanks Rachel!

Forward twelve years, and once again Playgoers are chucked out of Dartington and needing to transition to a new situation. And we need new directors to replace those of us getting too old.

We are planning a symposium of both established and aspiring directors to share ideas and experience, and look forward. We are also planning a programme of one act plays, so that new directors can direct individual plays with our support.  If you are interested in directing now or in the future, then please write to me: patrickcooperdjs@gmail.com.  I will keep you posted.

In the meantime, for what it’s worth, here are some of my ideas about directing specifically for Playgoers,
By far the most important thing is the choice of play. The director needs to love it, and see how it can be done, and also where it can be done.  Usually the play and the director come together.

Casting is what I find hardest, but it’s crucial. There are loads of talented actors around here, and if you cast it right, much of your work is done!
The committee are there to help you.  Make sure they do!  A really good production team makes all the difference. In the rehearsal process, it’s not just what you say to actors, but when you say it, that helps their performance.

Sometimes you come up against obstacles –  all directors will have their own examples – sometimes it can be a lot of work just to get the show on; but the magic of watching a performance come slowly to life is wonderful.
