Local Employers and Jobcentre Plus Join Forces to Create Jobs and Opportunities
Devon & Cornwall businesses are turning work experience and training into real jobs and saving thousands in recruitment costs.
Jobcentre Plus has launched a new campaign across Devon and Cornwall to encourage employers to take advantage of free recruitment services and specialist support. From job advertising and CV shortlisting to hosting interviews and running Sector Based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs), these services help businesses fill vacancies quickly and cost-effectively.
Success in Action
Antony from Torquay is one of many local success stories. After struggling to find work through traditional applications, Antony took part in a work experience placement with Engaging Communities Southwest (ECSW), arranged by Torquay Jobcentre. His enthusiasm and commitment impressed the team so much that, after volunteering beyond his placement, ECSW offered him a permanent IT support role. Antony now mentors’ new candidates, proving how work experience can break the cycle of job application rejections.
“Trying something different can work,” Antony said. “Work experience gave me the chance to show my skills and build confidence. I’d recommend it to anyone.”
Local businesses including Morrisons, B&M, and ECSW are already partnering with Jobcentre Plus offices in Brixham, Torquay, Totnes, and Newton Abbot to fill seasonal and permanent roles. These partnerships help employers:
- Advertise vacancies for free
- Access pre-trained candidates through SWAPs
- Host interviews and job fairs in Jobcentre offices
- Offer short-term placements to assess candidates before hiring
Olivia Shillabeer, Employer and Partnership Manager in Torquay, said: “We invite businesses into our offices to meet candidates face to face. It’s a great way to streamline recruitment and reduce costs, whether you have one vacancy or many.”
Opportunities for Jobseekers
Jobcentre Plus also supports jobseekers with hundreds of live vacancies on Find a Job.GOV.UK, plus seasonal roles in retail, hospitality, logistics, and care. Young people and those facing employment barriers can access one to one guidance and financial help through the Flexible Support Fund, covering costs like travel, equipment, and clothing for work or training.
Employers who think this may be suitable are encouraged to contact their local Jobcentre Employer Adviser.
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Pat McFadden said: “Over 329,000 more people have moved into work this year already, but today’s figures are exactly why we’re stepping up our plan to Get Britain Working. We’ve introduced the most ambitious employment reforms in a generation to modernise jobcentres, expand youth hubs and tackle ill-health through stronger partnerships with employers.”
