Have Your Say on Cycling and Walking in and Around Totnes

South Hams District Council are developing a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for South Hams and West Devon.

Referred to as the LCWIP, this plan aims to get more people cycling and walking within and between local towns and villages.

The plan is being produced on behalf of South Hams by Phil Jones Associates, a transport consultancy. The plan will have several different elements. It will identify priority routes for cycling and walking. It will highlight aspects of the roads and environment that discourage people from walking and cycling. It will propose interventions that could overcome people’s reluctance to walk and cycle.

The plan doesn’t have money attached to it, but it will be important in allocating money and resources as and when they become available. Most other areas in Devon now have, or are producing an LCWIP. Without one, it will be difficult to argue for new investment. There is a time limited opportunity for local people to comment on the proposed LCWIP. Public consultation is being organised by Commonplace, an organisation that specializes in citizen engagement.

Commonplace have set up a website and are holding a series of public sessions to get feedback on the plans.  There will be a drop in event at the Civic Hall in Totnes next Tuesday 1st October between 10am and 1pm.

Comments can also be made on the website at https://activetravelshwd.commonplace.is/
At the drop in, or on the website, you can comment on the priority routes, the proposed interventions and the barriers that get in the way of more walking or cycling. You can also make general comments about the LCWIP.
The consultation ends on 11 October and the LCWIP is due to be published by the end of 2024.

I am so glad for all these plans.
As someone who has been cycling from Totnes to surrounding towns and villages for the last 20 years, it is wonderful to see the suggestions for making routes from Totnes to Torbay, and to Plymouth more safe and cycle-friendly, and not compelled to go on busy traffic roads.
I do hope these intentions can be fulfilled.
