BROADHEMPSTON – On Saturday, June 22 the idyllic picture-postcard Devon village of Broadhempston will host its legendary annual summer fête.

Expect a feast of unforgettable summer games – tug of war, an old-school coconut shy and a dog show among so much else – plus top-notch food and drink, live music, DJs and premium cocktails until late.

Kids will love the bouncy castle, Broadhempston Library storytelling, sparkly Wowhaus craft workshop, silly games like ‘bat the rat’ and the ever-popular giant marble run. Grownups will love stalls from the local businesses like Riverford, handmade craft sellers, and a book exchange.

Broadhempston Fete PosterWe wanted to put on the ultimate English summer day out,” says Jessica Swinfen, who is organising the fête as a fundraiser for Broadhempston Village School to buy a new school bus, and for repairs to its lovely Medieval village church.. “The team have been racking our brains to try and recreate things we remember loving as children, with some modern twists.”

Modern twists like a recreation of the hit Netflix show ‘Is It Cake?’, alongside classic wheelbarrow races and awesome local talent Hulagran, the grandma hula-hooping sensation.

Joe from The Happy Mutt Co will be organising the keenly-awaited dog show, as local vet Huw Peplow judges, rosette in hand. Categories will include “gun dog”, “most handsome dog”, and “dog most like its owner”.

The raffle will include hundreds of pounds of prizes from local businesses including The Cott Inn, Totnes Wine, Fermoys, the Bearded Florista, Totnes Cinema, The South Devon Railway, Totnes Wine, Little Blue Budgie and many more.

Local musicians The Boogie Band will provide hip-swinging live entertainment, after singalong vibes from Totnes’ own Bangers & Mash, fresh from their triumphant run at the Barrel House. Later on DJ Rocketman will spin tunes as rum cocktails flow from the high-end Duppy Share bar.

During the day sample South Hams Brewery ales and ciders, a cup of joe from the Hope Coffee Van, and mouthwatering slices from Flour & Flame Pizza.

The fun kicks off at midday and will run on until 10pm, at Headlands Playing Field, TQ9 6DB.

We’re really excited to welcome people from all over the area to the village,” says Jessica Swinfen. “It’s going to be a lovely day – fingers crossed the weather stays on our side!”
