A Totnes to Salcombe Art Connection…
Salcombe Art Club (SAC) is based in what was previously a sail loft in the centre of Salcombe. SAC was established in the 1960 by a group of local artists and has since grown into a dynamic and vibrant club of nearly 200 members. The Club runs an exciting and diverse arts programme throughout the winter months and in the summer its Annual Exhibition from May to September. The club is fortunate to have a very active group of printmakers ‘The pressgang printmakers of SAC’ which holds an annual Hot Off the Press exhibition every Easter.

The Club attracts experienced tutors to provide courses suitable to all levels of experience from beginner’s wishing to try out drawing, print making or painting, to courses run with experienced and professional artists in mind. We offer one day stand-alone courses; weekend workshops lead by a tutor, to courses spanning a day a week from four to six weeks. These start on 24th February. The loft (accessed via one flight of stairs) is a well-lit, spacious warm space with excellent facilities for making art.
SAC not only provides a great space for art practice and learning, and it is also an active fundraiser for local and national charities. Each year SAC sponsors a student from Kingsbridge College undertaking a foundation/degree Arts Course.
The Spring programme offers a diverse and exciting range of classes: ‘Travelling Sketchbook’ course on keeping and developing a sketchbook, takes place on Thursdays for four weeks. There are a variety of oil painting days and weekly courses suitable for a wide range of experience, a three-day wood block printing course, a weekend of mixed media and mark making and a four-week course on Mondays on developing your painting using a wide range of source materials such as sketches and photos.

Full details can be seen on the SAC website www.salcombeartclub.org.uk using the tab ‘courses’. Courses are very good value for money and cost considerably less than many other art centres. To enrol on a course, you will need to become a Lay member (cost of £15.00 per annum) which entitles you to take part in as many courses as you want in a year, and you will receive SAC Newsletters with information about exhibitions and social events.
Great news for those living in or near Totnes there is an hourly 192 bus service from Totnes to Salcombe town centre every day about a five-minute walk to the art club.
