YUM – Shrooms Inspire Ambitious Night of Blissful Tunage

Well established Totnesians will recall events organised by Jason Burns and friends at the turn of this century with bosch. The acronym of ‘Bubble Optic Surreal Clubhouse’ enabled Jason to namecheck his favourite artist. Coming to Totnes from Exeter via a less than satisfactory stint in London, Jason describes his arrival here as an ‘..amazing experience. The kindliness and generosity was quite overwhelming‘. This was at a time when the Civic Hall urgently needed some love and the town was sadly in need of a decent cinema so Jason worked hard with bosch to enact happenings. theatrical events, club and film nights that addressed the void.

In 2004, with a new child in the family, Jason needed to become solvent becoming a social carer and therapist which has mostly arrested the creativity  of events up until now.

But Jason has returned to the fray with yum, an ambitious celebration of mycelium, referencing the hidden interconnections of thread-like hyphae that bind much of the natural world together. Yum is inspired by this interconnection between everyone. “I’m creating this to have fun – peace and celebration. It’s something I want and I think others want too. This is intended as a public manifestation”

You will notice that the event is subtitled ‘Part One.. Connection’ – So there’s more to come? “Yes, Parts 2 and 3 are already booked for next year” says Jason. He seems confident, so whats going to happen?

Studio One in Dartington (previously called Space) will host 3 DJ sets of dance from Charlequin (Afro and Latin Bass), Time to Rush (Breakbeat) and JayBe (Electro Pop and Cheeky House) with visuals from Tim Dollimore and The Media Workshop.

Studio Three will also be in place for ‘Atton Raon’ Sam Walker’s eclectic, sprawling, experimental pop full of hope, fury and joy and much multi-instrumentalism.  Described by Clash magazine as “An explosive, theatrical, multi-instrumental tour de force from a wildly-talented Devon crew…. Moving, in so many ways. A thing of beauty. A work of genius.”  There will also be Clare Parker and Emilio Mula aka Children of Compost (members of NooN) who will present a series of intimate multi-sensory cross art form encounters that explore & amplify mycelium communication & collective consciousness and Hannah Sneyd’s richly layered stories arrive on the wind from the Dartmoor wilds and thread a canny path between the humdrum and the fantastical.

The event promises “Many spaces, many environments, and many adventures…”

When Jason was challenged over the name ‘yum’ by a friend who knows he has a penchant for acronyms, he was surprised to realise he didn’t have one… However later in the day during a shower, “You Understand Magic” finally came to him!

There will also be food lounge managed by Djamilasfreshfeasts and a bar derived from mushrooms with alcohol free drinks, mocktails and products from Dartingtons Mycotonics. The Food offerings have options like Lion’s mane Steak,  Japanese spiced Shiitake and fennel burger and griddle marinated King Oyster mushroom in juicy ginger, maple syrup and tamari, zesty limes.

Jackie Juno will also be in attendance performing in the food lounge. Tickets are available now and served up in batches, the current tranch is £25 as the earlybird rate has already sold out. For the last tickets the price rises another fiver so it’s recommended to act quickly to secure the current pricing.

There are some rules…  The event is on Saturday 21st September from 8.00pm-12.00am but as this is as quite a theatrical event guests are asked to arrive from 7:30pm with the show starting at 8 – There will be no late entry after 8.30pm!

Jason is also hoping to see some fine costumery for the evening and he has hinted that there might be a pleasant surprise for the finest dressers…
