Local Energy Company Seek New Co‑ordinator
Totnes Renewable Energy Society (TRESOC) is recruiting a new Co‑ordinator / Energy Advisor to help steer one of the town’s most forward‑thinking community energy projects. The part‑time role – around four hours a week at £20 per hour – will support the fast‑growing Energy Local Totnes initiative. Applications are open until 12 noon on 27th March 2026, with interviews scheduled for the first week of April.
A Community Energy Model Gaining National Attention
Energy Local Totnes has become one of the area’s most celebrated grassroots climate projects. With 137 members and rising, the club enables households and small businesses to buy electricity directly from local renewable generators, including the 330kW hydro plant at Totnes Weir. It’s the first Energy Local “Plus” club in the UK – a model designed to scale sustainably by matching new members with new local generation. The approach is increasingly cited as a template for community‑led energy nationwide.
Members typically save 10–30% on their electricity bills, with the biggest savings going to those who shift usage to times of peak local generation. The project’s impact has not gone unnoticed: in June 2025, environmental journalist Lucy Siegle featured the scheme as the lead item on BBC One’s The One Show, and the club is shortlisted for Regen’s Green Energy Awards 2026.
What the Role Involves
The new Co‑ordinator / Energy Advisor will become the main point of contact for members, helping them navigate the Energy Local platform and understand their energy data. Responsibilities include:
- Completing online training with Energy Local CIC
- Managing the club’s webpage and member registrations
- Responding to enquiries by phone, email and in person
- Running monthly drop‑ins at the Totnes Climate Hub
- Delivering quarterly Dashboard training sessions
- Supporting community events, markets and stalls
- Handling member data in line with GDPR
- Working within the Energy Local ethos and systems
Who They’re Looking For
TRESOC is seeking someone who cares deeply about community energy and enjoys working with people. Strong organisational skills and confidence with digital tools are essential, as the role involves managing the online Portal, communications and member records. Previous experience as an energy advisor is helpful but not required – enthusiasm, reliability and a commitment to local renewable energy matter most and full training will be provided in April.
