ITS MOVEMBER AGAIN – Prostate Cancer Awareness

It would be good to be thought of as one in a million, but I’m one in 686,439 men who have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer since my own diagnosis in 2009, and one in 500,000 known to be living with, or after Prostate Cancer diagnoses.

Prostate Cancer FactsheetI’m still here after 15 years and numerous interventions and a great deal of help from the NHS.  And living a pretty full life.  Had I not been diagnosed, I probably wouldn’t be here now, so I’m damned glad I got myself checked when I did. And that is why I can be identified by my slow growing tache.

If you or your nearest and dearest men haven’t been checked, then it is high time they got their big boys’ trousers on and had their PSA checked by their GP.  A simple blood test could save a lot more aggro a few years down the line.  And that aggro also, and quite unfairly, affects families and friends. Our fundraising is also supporting men’s mental health, with the aim of reducing suicides among men.

This is mainly a plea for greater awareness of Prostate Cancer and the absolute common sense of being checked and, if necessary, getting treatment.  There is, of course, a continuing need for funding so, if you feel moved to put your shoulder to the wheel, you can donate using the link below.

Well, that’s Movember over for another year, and with only limited damage.

I’ve managed to grow a half way passable thing on my face drawing attention, I hope, to the need for men from 40 upwards to  get their PSA levels tested.  (PSA, you know, Prostate Specific Antigen, measured by a simple blood test, for goodness’ sake.)

The damage is another matter.  I’ve managed to compromise my modelling career, alienate my wife and grandchildren (my kids are past caring) and risk hypothermia in Totnes Market.

Now, at the end of November, comes the request.

If you possibly can, please donate via the link here to the research into this treatable disease.  Nothing will jump up and bite your bum if you don’t.  We know that there are other priorities in life.  But every small donation will help.
