Does Totnes and Bridgetown want community composting facilities?

That’s the question a working group is asking. The facility will enable Totnes residents to drop off their garden waste and also collect processed compost for use on their gardens.

Composting is a great way to make use of your garden waste – everything from lawn clippings to annual weeds, hedge-trimmings to faded flowers. You can also add plant-based kitchen waste, such as veg peelings, along with paper and cardboard.

Compost is then used as plant fertilizer and to improve soil’s physical, chemical, and biological properties. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste, recycling organic materials, and manure. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and fungi.

Both Totnes Town Council and South Hams District Council are very supportive of the project and some funding will be available to facilitate the set up.

Before the project can fully go ahead, there needs to be a proven need established from local residents, that the facility is required.

The Totnes Directory where a call out for composting will be madeTo this end, a survey questionnaire has been produced and is due to be distributed via the March edition of the Totnes Directory. The survey can either be filled in and dropped into one of the three stated locations or alternatively it can be completed online. Please complete the survey and also encourage friends and neighbours to also take part.

This will be another step towards a more sustainable Totnes.

There is no justification for creating a community composting hub in Totnes.
South hams district council already offer options for recycling green waste, either through the garden waste collection scheme or (paid for) or at the recycling centre on the industrial estate in Totnes.
The survey questions are flawed and do not identify a need. The very low response to the survey also suggests that residents, other than a small interest group, aren’t really bothered!
