Community Helping to Raise the Bay Horse Roof
This Friday 7th February The Barrel House Ballroom is hosting a fund raising gig in support of a community effort to help get much needed action on the Bay Horse roof in Cistern Street at the top of town.
When storm Darragh struck last December the ailing roof of the Bay Horse roof was dealt a final blow necessitating a complete replacement.
The Bay Horse is owned by Kathy and Rob Alexander, who over the years have built an amazing community resource in the ancient building. There is regular live music featuring local performers. Local groups meet in the pub for crafts, poetry readings and there are two book clubs. The monthly community quiz is often over subscribed and all the money raised is donated to local charities. There is always a warm welcome for anyone who wants to call in for a drink and a chat.
Regulars, friends and neighbours of the Bay Horse became really concerned that December’s storms threatened the viability of the pub. Like most hospitality businesses margins are tight and major unforeseen expenses are hard to bear. Kathy and Rob have sorted out the immediate problems but more work is needed.
The community quickly rallied round with hands on help, and more recently started fund raising for the longer term by setting up a GoFundMe page. Donations are now coming in, but there is a long way to go.
This Friday should see a major boost with the community organised gig at the Barrel House. The evening will be compered by Henry Everett who will be sharing some of his stories. There will be sea shanties from the Sea Gals and James Dumbleton, folk musician will be performing.
Tasty food will be available from the Kitchen Table. It promises to be a great night and all proceeds will go towards fixing the roof at the Bay Horse.
If you can’t get there on Friday, or even if you can, there’s the opportunity to be immortalised in the fabric of the Bay Horse. You can sponsor a slate and have your name or message inscribed for ever more in the new roof!
