Are our libraries a luxury or a lifeline?

In today’s fast-paced world, the question arises: are our libraries a luxury or a lifeline? As budget cuts threaten these vital institutions, we must examine their true value and the profound impact they have on our communities.

As the true extent of the cuts proposed by Devon County Council become clear, it is imperative that we recognise the importance of libraries. You can help ensure that these essential resources remain available to all.

Do you know what we could be losing? The invaluable services provided by our libraries are often taken for granted, yet their absence would leave a significant gap in our society.

Libraries serve everyone and are helpful throughout life. For a tiny proportion of the Council budget, we receive a wealth of resources and services that are crucial for personal and community development:

  • Education and literacy – Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator that a child will grow up to enjoy a happier and more successful life. Libraries provide access to a treasure trove of reading material, hosting events like storytime sessions and author visits that ignite a love for books in young minds. The Schools Literacy Network further enhances this by offering tailored support and resources, fostering a culture of reading that extends beyond the classroom.
  • Computers, photocopying, and WIFI printing – In an increasingly digital world, libraries offer free computer access, enabling individuals to apply for jobs, conduct research, and complete assignments. Free Wi-Fi and printing services reduce barriers for those without access at home. Additionally, the I.T buddies programme provides free tuition, helping patrons of all ages to develop essential digital skills.
  • Digital Library – Your library membership grants you free access to a vast array of digital reads, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, and ePress. This service not only enriches our reading experience but also ensures that even those who cannot visit in person can enjoy literature and educational resources from the comfort of their own homes.
  • Business and Employment – The Business & IP Centre in libraries across Exeter, Barnstaple, Paignton, Seaton, and Okehampton provides invaluable support for business owners and entrepreneurs. Access to resources and expert advice helps foster innovation and economic growth. Job seekers can also benefit from dedicated sessions that cover CV writing, interview preparation, and career advice, equipping individuals with the skills necessary to succeed in a competitive job market.
  • Health – Libraries Unlimited collaborates with the Devon Public Health Nursing team to offer vital health services, such as baby self-weighing in 22 libraries across Devon. Additionally, tools like blood pressure testing kits available for loan at Totnes library empower individuals to take charge of their health and well-being, demonstrating the library’s role as a community health resource.
  • Support for Dementia and Memory Loss – A specially curated collection of puzzles, games, and replica vintage items has been developed by Libraries Unlimited to assist individuals living with dementia. These resources provide stimulating activities that engage the mind and encourage social interaction, significantly improving the quality of life for those affected.
  • Music – The Music and Play Set Service offers a diverse selection of play scripts, choral music, and orchestral parts to groups throughout Devon and Torbay. This service not only supports local artists and musicians but also nurtures a vibrant community culture that celebrates creativity and artistic expression.
  • Combating Isolation – Libraries provide a warm, welcoming space for individuals seeking companionship and community connection. Events like book clubs, workshops, and community gatherings offer opportunities for social interaction, making libraries essential for combatting loneliness and fostering community spirit.

I would like to add to your list of benefits that local libraries are the memory of a community. Very often they have a trove of local history resources that are out of print, not digitised and not available anywhere else.
