“In we went and up and down some wonderful hills til we parked in a veritable fairyland” – wrote Leonard Elmhirst to his American fiancée Dorothy Whitney Straight on arriving at Dartington Hall on the 6th of March 1925 – “I’ve dreamt of it ever since as a fit home for you and the children.”

This was the moment their Dartington dream began. One hundred years later we are producing “All Things to All People”, a documentary feature film to commemorate our Dartington Centenary and to tell the story of Dartington and the Elmhirsts.

It was a shared philanthropic vision, Leonard the more practical agronomist and Dorothy the artistic and spiritual social reformer. Together they planned a model society to re-build and rejuvenate the ravaged rural economies of England, broken by the loss of young men to the horror of the Great War.

Dartington would be their canvass, their laboratory. It was a vision that embraced agriculture, industry, education and the arts, but above all, ideas – ideas seeking a more just, more sustainable and more caring world – you might say a utopia.

With unique, never before seen film archive from the 1930s & 40s Dartington Film Unit which has been restored and digitised, coupled to historic and contemporary interviews and location material, our film tells the story of Dartington not through a guide or narration but through the words, voices and ideas of those who made Dartington what it was, what it is and what we hope it can be.

Part Two coming in 2026.

My mother Worked at Dartington Hall throughout the 1930’s – is this film possible to purchase at all. Born in Totnes and lived there till 1975, but have visited many times over the years with family and friends still being there. My grandchildren now visit too. My mother was called Violet Evelyn Miller, known as Evelyn. I have silver fruit serving spoons and serviette ring given to my mother by Dorothy for 21st and wedding. My mother knew Susan Williams Ellis and Monica Flaherty who . Were students there and I am named Monica because she liked her and her name so much.
