Speed Cameras – Totnes Placed Fourth in Devon and Cornwall
An achievement not to be proud of!
Following a Freedom of Information request by the BBC, Devon and Cornwall Police have revealed the number of people caught by speed cameras in Devon and Cornwall.
In 2025 a total of 237,000 people were caught speeding in Devon and Cornwall.
7188 of these drivers were snapped by the array of cameras on Ashburton Road in Totnes.
The most prolific camera was on the Ashburton Road in Newton Abbot with 10,134 speeding offences. Newton Abbot was followed closely by the A38 in Landrake Cornwall* and the Old Laira Road in Plymouth. The Totnes camera clocked the next highest number.

Totnes did not record the fastest driver. That shameful honour went to Camborne in Cornwall where a speed of 139 mph was recorded. In the 30 mph zone in Totnes past Keviccs a motorist was caught doing 78 mph.
Many people take a negative view of speed cameras, seeing them as revenue generating. In reality excess speed is a major contributory factor in road traffic accidents. More than 600 people were killed or seriously injured in Devon and Cornwall last year. Within a five mile radius of Totnes, records show that there were 240 -310 injury collisions over the last five years.
If we want to reduce road accidents, we can only hope that speed cameras are seen by all as an important element in road safety, and that speeding eventually becomes as socially unacceptable as drink driving.
