The Big Bowls Weekend!
Bowls’ Big Weekend, partnered with Aviva, is back for its fourth year, and what will be the biggest yet! Totnes Bowling Club will be part of this national event and is opening its doors to anyone who fancies having a go at bowls on both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May from 10am to 4pm.
discover everything that is great about our sociable, accessible sport.
The Club was founded in 1925 although there is some conjecture over this… From their website: “There is some doubt to the exact date our present club was formed. There is a photo of the Mayor and Lady Mayoress opening the green in Borough Park on 25 June 1923. There is also a letter from AJ Hughes stating the club opened in 1925 and a letter from G Midgely saying the club was formed in 1926! Perhaps the most conclusive evidence is a scroll celebrating our Silver Jubilee in 1950, which “carbon dates” the present club to 1925!”
The Bowling Green is situated in Borough Park, adjacent to the railway station, neatly tucked in behind the tennis courts.
They have many Friendly and Touring matches during the year. The friendly matches cover a wide area of Devon, as well as clubs in Cornwall and Dorset. Touring teams come from many parts of the UK, and return regularly to enjoy the facilities which include 6 ‘rinks’, a well stocked bar and even an indoor mat for when it’s raining.
Great for all ages
Graham Sowerby of the club says “Come along to discover everything that is great about our sociable, accessible sport. It’s a sport for all ages and there’s a chance to meet 2 National and World Champions from the world of bowls who started their bowling life here at at Totnes Bowling Club.”
All equipment is provided but we ask you to come along in flat soled shoes to protect the “top class” playing surface.
Big Numbers
With over three million people watching Bowls’ Big Weekend on national television last year, and over 560 clubs on board for the 2024 event now might be the perfect time to try bowls.

Plus every Saturday morning from Saturday 20th April through to mid September they offer 6 free coaching sessions and if you then decide to join the friendly club the cost is just £30 for the first years membership.
Graham and the club very much look forward to welcoming you.
