Shocking New Film on Censorship To Be Screened in Totnes

A “shocking and eye-opening” new film called “Censoring Palestine” about media censorship of what’s happening in Palestine will be screened in Totnes

The film’s producer Norman Thomas said “The bulk of mainstream media, the worlds of education, entertainment — in all these areas Palestine is a taboo subject. The truth is suppressed or distorted and people who speak out or protest often face terrible consequences. Even social media is subject to systematic censorship.”
“This is the biggest attack on freedom of speech and the dissemination of news in this country since World War II.”

Censoring Palestine LogoThe film also claims that counter-terrorism laws are being abused to silence voices of protest.

a truly an eye-opening and shocking film

Mr Thomas said: “The film documents dawn raids on journalists, an academic being arrested for making a speech, protesters being jailed without bail for long periods of time  — and all using what appear to be totally false accusations of terrorism.”
The film also shows evidence of the extraordinary police crackdown on protest during the national march for Palestine on January 18 when many protesters were arrested including the chief steward, Chris Nineham.
Mr Thomas added: “Dissent has been criminalised. Protesters are being branded as terrorists.  This is a truly an eye-opening and shocking film.

The film features interviews with film director Ken Loach, comedian Alexei Sayle, rock star Roger Waters, Ben Jamal, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Lindsey German, Stop The War Coalition convenor.

Especially powerful in the film are the contributions of the mothers of two young women imprisoned for their actions in support of Palestine. The use of counter-terrorism laws means that these and other activists are being kept in jail for 15 months without bail. “These are huge injustices,” Mr Thomas said.

“Censoring Palestine” is the latest production from Platform Films, which has made programmes for the BBC and Channel Four, as well a number of independent documentary films, including “Not In My Name” about the Iraq war and “Oh Jeremy Corbyn – The Big Lie” about the rise and fall of the Labour Party leader.

The film screening will be hosted by Totnes Friends of Palestine on Monday 10 March at 7.30pm  in St John’s Church, Bridgetown. Doors open  7pm. Film showing at 7.30pm.
