Saint Mary’s Concerts are Back! Steve Knightley “Sanctuary – Songs from Sacred Spaces”
Award-winning singer-songwriter Steve Knightley returns to St Mary’s Totnes with a profound and intimate new concert on Friday 10th April called “Sanctuary – Songs from Sacred Spaces”. It’s the final date on what’s been an incredibly successful nationwide tour, and the final concert of St Mary’s re-opening Easter Fiesta.
Renowned for songs rooted in history, landscape and sense of place, Steve has curated a tour that places his storytelling and craftsmanship in direct dialogue with the venues themselves — a handpicked selection of churches, chapels and ancient buildings chosen for their atmosphere, beauty and acoustic warmth. These are rooms where sound lingers, where lyrics resonate, and where audiences are invited into a deeper kind of listening.

Stripping his music back to its essence, Steve revisits material shaped by influences ranging from Bob Dylan and William Blake to the English folk canon and his own extensive catalogue. The result is an evening designed to be immersive, reflective and quietly powerful — concerts where space and song become inseparable. The performance also features special guest Dan Salvatore, whose hand-forged handpan instruments create shimmering, meditative soundscapes that bloom in these resonant environments.
Dan’s ambient, bell-like tones weave around Steve’s voice and guitar, adding an elemental presence that transforms each venue into a calming, contemplative sound world. Together, Steve and Dan offer audiences a rare musical experience: a thoughtfully curated journey into melody, poetry, and stillness — a genuine sanctuary at the start of spring.
Steve is part of the West Country’s music – he has an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Plymouth university and, in the words of Robin Denselow in The Guardian, he’s “the gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor”. Don’t miss this exceptional finale evening!
