‘Psalms and Sacrifices’

Sunday November 23rd 7.30pm at Great Hall Dartington.

Dartington Community Choir’s Autumn concert, PSALMS & SACRIFICE combines dramatic contrasts of both passion and exhilaration in a concert not to be missed. This is a golden opportunity to hear three great composers of the 20th century: Poulenc, Leonard Bernstein and Randall Thompson in works which touch the very heart of what it is to be human. The choir, conducted by Simon Dunbavand will be supported by 2 soloists, Catherine Hamilton and Harriet Oakley and an orchestration of piano, Ian Curror, harp, Sally Jenkins and percussion, Michelle Hiley.

‘Gloria’, Poulenc’s most celebrated work, was first performed in 1961. Each of the six movements will be interspersed with a scene from his less well-known opera, Dialogues des Carmilites.
The Last Word of David is a short piece by American composer, Randall Thompson. The title refers to the book of pronouncements of King David from the Book of Samuel and Chronicles and was first performed in 1949.  Bernstein’s riotous Chichester Psalms, sung in Hebrew, was commissioned by Chichester Cathedral in 1965 and contains, as requested “a hint of West-side story”. This piece celebrates its 60th birthday this year, as does our conductor, Simon Dunbavand.

The choir will be accompanied by 2 soloists, sopranos Catherine Hamilton and Harriet Oakley, and a simple and exquisite orchestration of piano, harp and percussion.
