A joyful mix of classic tunes and seat-of-your-pants improv

New Totnes music live night BANGERS & MASH is all about smiles
TOTNES: A new live music night going down on Friday May 17 at the Barrelhouse Ballroom, Totnes will bring together the choicest floor-filling favourites with an artsy, semi-improvised artistic sensibility.
From Andy Hill, the massive pianist who brought you F*** IT, LET’S JUST PLAY THE BEATLES and NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL A PUB SINGALONG, his new night BANGERS & MASH will introduce thundering live drums and an array of face-melting synth sounds.
“Basically, I wanted to make my ever-popular singalong sets a bit more dancey, a bit more ‘Friday night’,” says Andy Hill. “Hence BANGERS & MASH was born”.
Andy’s old musical partner in crime Rich Soward happens to be on tour in the UK, and will be playing drums, after opening the night with an incendiary solo set of his own brilliant original material. Moving lyrics, deft melodies, a class act.
“Then it’ll be four-to-the floor hits, dance anthems, pop classics, Disney tunes, Beatles, Elton, you name it,” says Andy. “I’m not actually sure what I’ll play. Much like a DJ I’ll be reading the crowd to see what works, interspersing the bangers with dancey improv moments, dirty baselines, and lashings of joyful banter between old friends and musical compadres.”
Other special guests on the night will be Mabonman, aka Will Tyler, and Rowland O’Connor, who has a long musical history with both Andy and Rich Soward. Also, in a real treat, the honeyed vocal stylings of popular Totnes singer Tess O’Connor.
Tickets are a fiver on the door – “an absolute steal, a bargain, sale of the goddamn century” – and all proceeds will go towards getting the artists sloshed afterwards.
