A Fundraising Jumble for Gazan Family
A family who had to flee Gaza for Egypt is being supported by Totnes volunteers.
Deema and her family were displaced six times as they moved from the north to the south to escape bombing. Now they are in Cairo but their extended family is still in Gaza.

This Friday a jumble sale is being held at The Mansion organised by Laura Segan to raise more money for Deema, who she got to know through The Hands Up Project. The HUP was founded in Totnes and connects Palestinian children to others around the world. Via video link they play, create and make friends.
Laura, an artist and art therapist, has set up a Go Fund Me page to the family, who had to borrow money to escape. “They managed to get to Cairo before the Rafah crossing was shut. But they can’t work and they owe quite a lot of money,” Laura said.
On the funding page Deema writes: “ The journey to Cairo took 24 hours and was exhausting.”
Before that her family – mother, father, two sisters and a brother – lived in a tent and suffered from illnesses due to poor food, dirty water and the cold.
Deema, 17, has been to the Palestinian consulate to enrol to finish her studies.
The jumble sale starts tomorrow (Friday) at 10am outside The Mansion.
