Totnes Renewable Energy Society are looking for a Legal Director. Is that you?

Legal Director/Company Secretary Needed for Totnes Renewable Energy Society (TRESOC)

TRESOC develops community-owned renewable energy in Devon with an aim to empower the local community to develop and control its own renewable energy supplies.

They garnered awards and have established a sustainable energy company with 550 member shareholders and have a portfolio of renewable energy installations stretching from Plymouth to Exeter. Well known past projects include the water turbine at the weir on the Dart which generates more than a million kilowatt hours of power per year, solar panels installed on Follaton community centre and panels on Leatside surgery.

They are in search of a socially minded and eco-friendly Legal Director/Company Secretary to join their management team.

The responsibilities of the role include:

  • Responsibility for TRESOC’s legal operations
  • Managing existing legal contracts
  • Overseeing the development of new contracts
  • Involvement in the legal content of share issues

The downside of the role is that it isn’t paid! However joining with the society will be rewarding, so the ideal candidate will need to be self-motivated and flexible. They are looking for applicants with a background in UK law; however, a specific knowledge of renewable energy law is not essential.

The board meets once a month on a Tuesday evening from 7-9pm, which is currently being carried out on Zoom video meeting systems.

Current projects, that are all community owned, include:

  • A mini solar grid at Clay Park
  • A 100kW hydro power plant at Staverton Leat
  • 500kW of roof mounted solar power

In 2015, Tresoc were awarded RegenSW’s ‘South West Green Energy Award for the ‘Best Community Initiative’ for the Shine Project. Working with South Devon Rural Housing Association installing Solar PV on 42 properties, which means cheaper fuel bills and greater energy independence for residents. In 2018 their successful primary education programme, the Renewable Energy Experiential Learning (REEL), was nominated for Regen’s ‘Best South West Community Initiative’.
