Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s classic I Know Where I’m Going! is an enchanting and deeply stirring romantic comedy, set towards the end of the second world war on the remote Isle of Mull. Produced in black and white and supposedly rushed though while stocks of technicolour film were limited due to the war, I Know Where I’m Going! is a surprise, hidden gem between The Archers better known masterpieces.
Joan, a stubborn English woman, sets out to travel and marry Robert, a wealthy industrialist. When foul weather sets in she gets trapped in Mull Island, the day be fore their wedding. There, she meets the islanders and in particular Torquil, a young naval officer who also happens to be the rightful Laird of Kiloran. Gradually, the island and it’s people take effect and Joan begins to fall in love.
